Connecticut Sheep Breeders Association, Inc. - OUR MISSION Our mission is to promote and encourage keeping sheep in Connecticut. The CSBA was formed in 1893, and we have been supporting Connecticut shepherds since that time by educating sheep farmers about issues relevant to raising lamb and wool, and facilitating marketing opportunities.   2014 CT Sheep and Wool Festival Has Come and Gone!Washed Away? Not At AllDespite the weather, we had a really great turnout;  Wayne Kimball was the lucky winner of the CT Blanket doorprize as one of the 800 plus attendees that didn't include the over 50 vendors; another 40 or more volunteers and your CSBA board of directors. In addition we had some wonderful participation by local 4-H clubs which included the Great Goats Club managing parking detail (all day in the rain) and a wonderful Activity Center in the red barn for kids and adults with plenty of fiber friends provided by the Tranquil Menagerie, Paca Pals and Tolland Trotters Clubs.Other 4-H support included clean up detail and runners helping out vendors and the festival organizers. Our "Event Tent" was new this year and seemed to be a popular center of activity with the Society for Creative Anachronism; the Bobbin Lace Group and the Crochet Guild; we also had ongoing demos by volunteers and the spinning corner which was heavily supported by the Nutmeg Spinners Guild. The "Fiddleheads". our strolling minstrels braved the rain and lightened the mood.Connecticut Farms were big participants in the fleece sale,  as vendors and as members of the Connecticut Blanket Program which did all the skirting of the fleece from the UConn sheep!A very sincere THANK YOU to all that participated in some way.If you want to be more involved next year, contact us now.Never to early to put your name on a list.See you on April 25th, 2015 for the 106th Annual Connecticut Sheep and Wool FestivalComing Soon2014 CSBA Logo T-shirts, Hoodies and TotesWool Collection for the 2014 CT Blanket Wool Collection will be from 9am - 3pm on Saturday, May 31st and Saturday, June 7th at the UCONN sheep barn.  Email Bill Cournoyer with the time you would like to come and how many pounds of white and dark wool you plan to bring.  We would like to spread out arrival times to speed the process along.  Please remember you must be current on your membership before collection day and new participants in the project must have taken the workshop on wool quality.  Questions other than the requested information to be sent to Bill should be sent to Sylvia Murray.Donations to Close the Gap in memory of Laura "Jo" JuddThe Tolland County Agricultural Center is having a "Close the Gap" campaign to purchase the Gunther Family Farm. The field where the dog trial has been held is part of this property and it would be a wonderful addition to TAC, not to mention the buffer it would give them by keeping a commercial venture from purchasing it.  In the 2013 manufacturing process there were 5 Queen Size CT Blankets made from excess yardage.  The committee decided that because Jo spent so many years with Tolland County 4-h, the Tolland Agricultural Center and so many Connecticut Sheep Breeders Association projects, that these extra blankets should somehow benefit TAC's accquisition of the Gunther Family Farm and decided to give the first five people who donate an amount in excess of $175 one of these blankets. By doing it this way your donation to TAC is tax deductible. Shipping will be extra and not included in the donation. Please contact Sylvia for specific ordering information.P.S.  TAC will accept donations in other amounts and you can designate that it be in Jo's memory.UPDATE 4/28/14 - 4 blankets left New format announced for New England Sale The New England Sheep & Wool Growers Association has announced that they are changing the format for the annual sheep sale from an auction to a private treaty sale.  The sale is open to all members of NESWGA and there is an entry fee of $10/head.  Sheep must be penned by 7 pm Friday night to allow inspection of animals and paperwork and the sale will begin at 8 am Saturday.  Selling ends at 6 pm and all animals must be out of pens by then.  The used equipment will still be auctioned off as in previous years. Please read the press release below or check the NESWGA website as there are several other changes that should make this an excellent opportunity for those wanting to sell this year. NESWGA Press Release  Attention New sheep producers/owners or anyone that needs help with their sheep operation! Announcing the American Sheep Industry Association Mentor Program: The ASI has voted to continue the mentor program which allowed us to connect experienced sheep producers with newer less experienced sheep producers, owners or “want to be” sheep owners.  We kicked this program off at our Blue Ribbon Forum last year and it was so well received that we would like to continue the effort by renewing the program which offers consultation or even a site visit by one of our mentors.  As with the program last year, the crux of the program is to share knowledge, help identify areas of concern and match folks with resources.  Funding for this program has been renewed by ASI, however, funds are limited so this is a “first come, first served” situation and site visits will be discontinued when funding runs out. If you would like to take advantage of this program, please contact one of our mentors from the list below.   Peter Sepe: Mentor Program Coordinator, [email protected], (203) 270-9507Colin Siegmund: Mentor Program Coordinator, [email protected], (860) 315-7684Melissa Higgins: Coventry: [email protected], (860) 966-9264Regina Malsbary: Tolland: [email protected], (860) 742-5483Anne McIntyre-Lahner: Guilford: [email protected]. There are several summer workshops with farm visits scheduled.  For more information on the project go to www.meatsystems.uconn.edu or contact Michael Keilty.
